Tuesday February 10th on a field trip to University of Washington, the wind ensemble went through a whirlwind of events. “We went to perform and take a few master classes to learn some technique,” Senior Melissa Derbecker said. Flautist Rachel Kim was on the bus that took a wrong turn, resulting in the students being about an hour late. “It wasn’t really that big of a deal, but some of us were really upset. The poor man just took a wrong turn is all,” she said.

After the map mishap, the second buss had some problems as well. “A truck pulled up next to us and told us that one of the bottom hatches was open,” Junior Samantha Fehr said. The bus driver had to make a pit stop and make sure everything was locked and secure. “All of our instruments could’ve fallen out, it wasn’t that big of a deal or anything it was just a bit scary,” Fehr said.

The mishaps with the busses resulted in their performance time moving from 8:00am to 9:00am. “Since our performance was moved an hour, all of our classes were too. Everything was just off, but it was okay,” Derbecker said. Although the trip may have been delayed, with a positive attitude, the wind ensemble “ended up having a great time,” as Derbecker said. “We were refreshed on our musical abilities by UW instructors and students. All-in-all the field trip was really worth it,” Houston Fleischmann said.
