On Monday, March 27, the franchise Dick’s Drive In announced its new location live on television at 10:30 p.m. and at the Wallingford location. The new Drive-In will happen in the South side of King County, once again. Within the first day over 100,000 people voted. This resulted in the website crashing. In the end, about 170,000 people from across the country cast their vote on to where the new location should be.

The first Dick’s Drive-In opened in Wallingford. Since then, all locations have had long lines throughout the day and into the night. This year, the community had the voice to choose where their new location will be with the voting system. It was between the South side and the East side of King County.

South end locations include West Seattle, Auburn, Renton, Burien, SeaTac, Tukwila, Kent, Normandy Park, Des Moines and Federal Way.

Over the past 63 years, the menu has faced little change. With their classic hamburgers, hand-cut French fries, and individually made milkshakes, the Dick’s Deluxe is their most requested item. The Dick’s Deluxe includes lettuce, mayonnaise, and chopped pickles. There are no substitutions allowed. The only available options are the Deluxe without cheese or fries without salt. When the Drive-In opened in 1954, the burgers were 19 cents, fries 11 cents and shakes were 21 cents. Today, they range from $1.25 to $3.10 with the Deluxe being the most expensive.

For an iconic Seattle landmark, these burgers have their fair share of fame. In Sir-Mix-A lot’s “Posse on Broadway,” he raps about the Capitol Hill location. Hinting that the Drive-Ins are where the kids hangout, Sir-Mix-A lot states, “Go back the other way, we’ll stop and eat at Dick’s -Dick’s is the place where the crew hang out,” for he himself is a Seattle native.  As for the fellow native, hip-hop artist Macklemore, filmed portions of a music video for his song “White Walls” at Dick’s Drive-In in 2013. The 2009 romantic comedy “Love Happens”, actress Jennifer Aniston can be spotted holding a Dick’s bag, as the film was set in Seattle.

Even though some people are unhappy that the new location, everyone will still love Dick’s and their great burgers.
