On March 19th, Glacier Peak’s softball team played their second non-conference match up against Mount Vernon High School. The lady grizzlies knew they had to settle the score and win due to a tough loss on Wednesday. “It was definitely really important to us to win so we could prove to ourselves that we are a good team and that we weren’t going to let our start of the season bring us down but instead bring us up,” outfielder Abby Doney said. Glacier Peak went into the game not knowing anything about their opponent’s ability. “Since we have never played them, yes we were going into the game not knowing what to expect, but that didn’t stop us from playing our competitive game. Every team we play with this year, no matter, will have changed, they are always going to be different. We play how we play no matter what. We don’t change how play due to how good or bad the other team is. We play the game we know how to play,” Doney said. But that didn’t stop the Grizzlies. As the rain started to fall, the game was on with the umpire’s signature shout “Play ball!” The Grizzlies came out strong scoring 14 runs in the first inning. “Towards the middle of the first inning, I started to feel really bad, especially since I’ve played select ball with the pitcher. I even remember saying in the dugout that it was pitiful, not that they were of course, but that we were scoring so much.” shortstop Nina Kim said. “I just felt really bad for them.” There is no mercy rule in the first several innings. The Grizzlies finished on top with a 20 to 7 victory setting their overall standings to 1-1. Glacier Peak Softball’s first home game, as well as first conference game, is on Wednesday, March 25th against Edmonds-Woodway.
