A nationwide petition was started by Daniel Brezenoff just after the election. Brezenoff feels that President Elect Trump is unfit to serve as President and because Secretary Clinton won the popular vote, she should be President.

The petition has more than 4.6 million signatures and counting and the Gofundme ‘Electoral College Petition’ account has just over $81,000 dollars. Brezenoff  and his supporters have a goal in mind. “We are calling on the 149 Electors in those states to ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton,” he said.

On December 19, the Electors of the Electoral College will cast their ballots. If they all vote the way their states voted, Donald Trump will become the president of the United States. However,  14 of the states electoral voters in Trump’s column are allowed to cast votes for Hillary Clinton without any legal penalty.

“I don’t agree with the petition because Donald Trump has already been elected. I don’t think the petition is going to persuade the Electoral College to change their votes,” Olivia Stefanson said.

Students have differing views on the petition. Some feel it may have an effective outcome or may just be ineffective. “As a Clinton supporter and liberal I think it’s totally appropriate to protest and rally for movements or causes ,BLM, LGBTQ, etcetera, since it’s a peaceful protest. I think it’s perfectly fine to voice an opinion and hope to make an impact,” Taylor Carness said.

The back and forth continues, “Secretary Clinton won the popular vote and I think we should base it off of popular vote rather than electoral vote. Donald Trump said the voting was rigged at the time when it seemed like Hillary would win. Now that he won, he says it’s perfect; which does seem a little fishy,” Tyler Walsh said.

“I don’t think the election was rigged. I think people to just see what happens and it’s important for us to move forward and not dwell on what may happen. It is also important to realize what is done is done and focus on the future,” Noor Baloch said.

The final results for the president of the United States will be on December 19th. At that time we will see if the petition has had an effect.
