SHS Fights Hunger

Last year, Snohomish High School and their DECA program held a major event that helped thousands of people both locally and other hurting places in the world. The whole school and members of the community contributed to make it possible. They hosted the first annual “SHS Fights Hunger” event where they raised funds and packed 78,580 nutritious meals. They are hosting the same thing again this year.

They need to raise around $35,000 in order to reach their desired goal of 150,000 meals. One of the many ways they will be raising funds is through a “March Madness” style bracket. They will be competing against each other to see who can raise the most money. The school will also be taking donations and offering sponsorships. They will need these funds to create the highly nutritious meals at a low cost.

All meals are packed in a small and highly portable bag, which will then be shipped to areas in need. On average, the meals cost $0.25 and can generously feed six to seven people. They are 50% protein and have a dissolvable vitamin capsule to help give people added nutrients. This combination can reduce malnutrition in six days. This plan will create many meals for people in need.

This year they are sending the meals Haiti and local food banks. They will be packed on May 10th as a school effort. Teachers can choose to take their students down to the gym from first to fifth period to help assemble the meals. Then sixth period will be used as a cleanup period. The special needs students and elementary students are getting in on the fun tooo. Together they are decorated the boxes by coloring them.

“It was great to see kids come out and say how much they loved it,” Ben Ducette said. Ducette is the Snohomish DECA Advisor and teacher. He is the one who help start this great idea with his DECA students.
