It has been almost two months now since the first episode of “The Last of Us” aired on HBO Max, and it’s been an amazing experience to watch. There are seven episodes out so far and everyone seems to love them all. It tells an amazing story about two people, Ellie and Joel, traveling across America after a deadly outbreak, dealing with fungus-infected monsters and ruthless killers while trying to survive.

The first episode opens with an old TV show interview with a scientist talking about diseases; he mentions that there is this neurological disease with fungi that affects small bugs but can’t be passed to humans because our bodies internal temperature is too high for the fungus to survive. However, the scientist mentions if the earth got slightly warmer and the fungus evolved to deal with warmer temperatures, then the fungi could infect humans and that would be the end for humanity since there is no known cure or vaccine to prevent the fungi. This opening is a terrific way to kick off the show because it gives this creepy vibe and foreshadows the main conflict in the show.

Throughout the show, there are amazing visuals on display of an apocalyptic Earth where major cities are empty and overrun with plants, the only inhabitants being the fungus monsters roaming around looking for anyone or anything to infect. The acting from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who portray Joel and Ellie respectively, is phenomenal. Their acting is incredibly convincing whenever they’re on screen, doing such an excellent job that you almost believe there really is an apocalyptic world outside.

Usually when studios try and remake video games into other pieces of media like TV shows and movies it doesn’t go very well, but with “The Last of Us” it’s completely different. It’s simply perfect in the best ways and hits all the right marks. If you’re looking for a show to watch and to get invested in, I highly recommend this show. You will not regret it.
