“Tarzan” will be the first fall musical to be performed by the Glacier Peak High School Theatre Department, for a total of four shows, November 10, 11, 17 and 18.

There will also be a new director this year. Steven Ortiz owns and operates Ludus Performing Arts in Lake Stevens. “Tarzan” will put Ortiz’s show resume into its mid thirties, he is no amateur to the stage.

Emma Hanson, a junior, plays the role of Jane Porter. Hanson compared past years’ experiences to this year’s so far.

“Last year things definitely didn’t move as quickly as they’re moving now. We have had a lot more time to do run throughs and to polish and make sure that we’re getting everything done quickly. And I also feel like things are a little more organized, it’s kind of nice. It’s just a new experience when you have a new director,” Hanson said.

Senior, Victoria Rodriguez, the Hair and Makeup Lead, spoke of challenges she has faced leading the hair and makeup team for this show.

“There’s a lot of mixing and matching and trial and error,” Rodriguez said.

Certain costumes for the apes have specific accent colors that the makeup must match. Kala, the mother, played by Freja Jorgensen, for example, has a deep burgundy as her accent color. As I was interviewing Rodriguez, her hand was a pallet, mixing and blending red eyeshadows to find just the right shade.

Michelle Camber, one of three assistant stage managers spoke of the people and new environment created with this year’s theatre family.

“As well as having a new mix of kids in the production [has progressed the theater program]. We have a lot people who used to be crew members who are now in cast and that’s a nice mix,” Camber said.

This year’s play will definitely be an exciting one.
