Giddy for the Games

Giddy+for+the+Games

New York Times Games have overcome the internet this past year with their online word and logic puzzles as people compete to top their fellow players. NYT Games has a variety of mini games within the app such as Wordle, Connections, Sudoku and more. With just a download away, it makes for fun times whether you only have five minutes to play, or fifty.

One of the most popular games off of NYT Games is Wordle. Wordle is a word game, played only once a day, where six tries are given to guess what the word of the day is. Players can keep up a streak based on how many days in a row they were able to solve the word of the day in under six guesses. “The crossword is really hard, but I like Wordle. I find them fun to do. I’ve lost all my streaks, but I used to have a streak probably like a month. I like that they have a refresh every day of new games.  The crossword is just so hard. I tried it multiple times because I like crosswords, but I feel like they make it extra hard. I don’t know what any of the clues are. I have solved other crosswords but not the New York Times crossword,” Ellie Moody said.

While Wordle was the game to originally make NYT Games a hit, there are other games that people also play consistently. With the help of social media, Connections is rising in popularity. In Connections you are handed a group of words. With that group of words, you take four that relate to each other and pair them all together to make connections. “I’m actually really enjoying Connections. My students turned me on to it and it’s a good wordplay game rather than just trying to guess a word it’s trying to make connections with the words and find groupings. It’s more brainpower. Back when Wordle came out I would compete with other teachers at GP but now I don’t keep up with it that much anymore. We do it in class in different class periods every day; it’s just fun to do something with the kids and see if we can get it right,” Mr. Divito said.

Though the app tends to dominate in word games, there is still more than that with puzzles such as Tiles and Sudoku. “I really like the Sudoku it just takes a really long time, but I also really like the Wordle. I’m a fan of Wordle but I’m just really bad with word games so I like Sudoku more. It’s a fun little puzzle even though I get angry at it sometimes. It’s fun to focus on and it passes time,” Sabine Kenney said.
