With the arrival of summer comes the return of farmers’ markets across Washington. Most markets open in early or mid-May and run till the fall, offering fresh produce, local eats and goods, and a fun community activity.
The Snohomish Farmers Market opens on May 1 and operates till Oct. 30 on every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. Other nearby markets, however, like Monroe’s and Everett’s, operate at different times. Everett’s runs from May 11 to Oct. 26 every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Monroe’s runs from May 28 to the end of September every Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. With a variety of markets running throughout the summer and into the fall, there are plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy local offerings. Some markets, like Ballard and Pike Place, even operate year-round.
For Miranda Myers, the Snohomish Farmers Market is fun and has a personal connection to her. “My mom loves the Snohomish Farmers Market, so we kind of have an in with the dining experience going on there, where my mom’s going to be helping out there. I think this will make it even more of a fun activity for me this year. It’s awesome and I would recommend people to go,” Myers said.
Others prefer the non-seasonal markets, like the Ballard Farmers Market. “I love the farmers market in Ballard. It’s every Sunday, so I don’t have to worry about it shutting down once summer ends, which is good because I go there all the time. The salmon sandwich there is so good, and also all the local sellers are super kind and appreciative. I also love the musicians there, they’re all so talented,” Caroline Mellis said.
Even occasional visitors find the experience enjoyable. “I’m not really a regular customer at farmers markets, but the few times I went were really fun. I think it’s a fun thing to do over the long summers, it’s a good way to get out of the house,” Skyler Grogan said.
Whether you’re a regular or a casual visitor, these farmers’ markets offer something for everyone. With such a wide range of markets operating seasonally and year-round, there’s always the opportunity to explore what your community has to offer.
