The Sheridan Market hosted the live performance of both the Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands on Sunday, May 18. Located in Lake Forest Park in Bothell, the families of these musicians crowded into the small venue to enjoy the jazz performances of these musicians as well as the many foods and drinks that were offered.
The show kicked off at 7 p.m. with Jazz II’s performance. They performed six songs in their set, in addition to small performances by individual groups within the band, who got to choose a head chart to play with the rhythm section.
After a relatively quick transition, Jazz 1 was on the stage and performed five songs in their first set. During a short break after Jazz 1’s first set, Cast Iron Jazz, a small band consisting of Ivan Dimson on bass, Kasra Fahim on drums, Kenji Oikawa on alto and tenor saxophone, Nyx Baldeviso on guitar, and Minoru Oikawa on clarinet, performed they’re own set for everyone visiting that evening. “I actually got us started so that we could play at the Snohomish Farmer’s Market, which was a paid gig, where we performed on May 8,” Minoru Oikawa said. “I remember asking Nyx first to join during one of the basketball games this year.”
To finish off the night, Jazz 1 performed their last set of five songs, including the song, Sandu. Arranged by Mr. Mines, the former band teacher at Valley View Middle School, the audience was able to enjoy the performance of this arrangement of Sandu as well as an incredible solo from Mr. Mines on the trumpet.
Although the location may have seemed out of place to the musicians performing and their families that night, this wasn’t the first time that the jazz bands had performed at the Sheridan Market. The Sheridan Market, a small family-owned business, often hosts live performances in their space and, as they say on their website, they support school bands as they believe it’s important to bring their music to life.
