The biopic “Michael” had its theatrical release on Friday, April 24. It details the life of pop star Michael Jackson through the lens of his struggle for artistic independence against the control of his father and earliest manager, Joe Jackson. Director Antoine Fuqua begins the movie with the Jackson family band’s rise to fame in the 1960’s, and ends with Michael Jackson’s solo tour 20 years later.
Several members of the Jackson family are involved in this film, with five of his siblings and his son being credited as executive producers. Also, playing the leading role of Michael Jackson is Jaafar Jackson, his nephew.
Overall, the movie’s visuals were very appealing. Soft lighting is used to illuminate emotional moments and create a striking feeling of childhood nostalgia, while bright and cold visuals convey the vastness and immense detail of concert performances. Costuming throughout the movie is extremely detailed, as each component of the iconic white glove and accompanying concert suit sparkles when on stage. The soundtrack also stands out, as the singer’s major hits such as “Thriller” and “Billie Jean“ are featured during turning points of his career .
Despite these highlights, the movie lacks in giving Michael Jackson or his family members’ characters enough depth. Their acting feels impersonal at times, and storylines don’t delve into possible career setbacks outside of the main conflict with Jackson’s father. The script also doesn’t include enough traits about Jackson that may show who he was outside of career development. A majority of the movie instead seems to vaguely detail only the most well known aspects of the artist’s life.
These aspects of the film are somewhat able to create a generally entertaining yet average viewing experience. It is likely worth watching for fans of the “King of Pop,” though it may not be so appealing for those who are looking for a deeper look into the life of the global superstar, or the person he was.
