The Met Gala is a charity event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The Met Gala was founded in 1946 and had its first major event in 1948. Every year the Gala is held on the first Monday of May, which marks the annual fashion exhibit hosted by the Costume Institute, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  

Every year the gala is organized by Vogue Magazine. The way that designers are chosen for designing the dresses that attendees wear is that the designers own the copywriting to their designs, making it so that no other designers make or change the original designs.  

“Two people on the guest list for this year’s Met Gala that I am excited to see there are Ryan Gosling and Zendaya because they never really fail to show up on the red-carpet sporting alluring looks. When I see better-looking outfits, there are always not the best outfits to go with them. One of the designs from last year’s event is Alexa Chung’s dress because it is plain ugly, when I saw pictures of it, I was wondering who would wear something like that,” Emily Watts said.

This year the co-chairs that will be joining Anna Wintour are Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Zendaya. These wonderful actors and artists are going to be welcoming guests to this year’s event.  Anna Wintour is 74 years old and has been serving an editor in chief of the American Vogue Magazine since 1988. She also started working at Condé Nast Worldwide Publications as Global Chief Content Officer in the year 2020, and also started working as an Artistic Director at the same time.

“At last year’s Met Gala, there were some questionable outfits that were sported. One of the outfits that I disliked the most was Kendall Jenner’s because she was wearing a swimsuit. At last year’s Gala, some outfits were even more revealing, but I just feel like Kendall’s choice of designs was not as good as it could have been. This year I heard that two of my favorite K-POP artists were invited, them being, Jungkook from BTS and Hyunjin from Stray Kids,” Aubrey Heinson says. 

The Met Gala has a different theme each year making sure that the attire sets the tone for the rest of the night. The Met Gala has a different theme each year making sure that the attire sets the tone for the rest of the night, throughout the years the Met has held events with themes like 2021 the theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” this was the year of young American designers that had the opportunity to show their skills in the spotlight, the designers ranged from La Réunion to Mark Jacobs. In 2023 the theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” showing the inventions of Lagerfeld instead of the man himself.  

This year the theme of the gala is supposed to be “The Garden of Time.” This theme is supposed to be based on some drawings and inspirations from the American novelist J.G. Ballard from a short story written by him in 1962.  

The Met Gala is an invitation-only event so not everybody can go, this means that people who are normally in the spotlight like celebrities and overall famous people are the only ones who can go. If you get an invitation, then you must pay the ticket fee which is around $50,000. If you were to buy a ticket, then you would have to find a designer who is willing to make your outfit, that alone would cost a fortune. If a person would like to reserve a table at the gala the cost would be more than the ticket itself, a table costs upwards of $300,000, according to Time Magazine. So that would make it impossible to find the money to buy the ticket, pay the designer, and reserve the table for normal people.  

Throughout the past years, the VIP guest list has been full of A-list artists, actors and actresses, and general celebrities, like Janelle Monáe, Kim Kardashian, Anne Hathaway, Pedro Pascal, Lil Nas X, Jonathan Groff, Hugh Jackman, and many, many others. People who normally are of higher social status are invited to the event to draw attention and donate to the Costume Institute. 

“At last year’s Met Gala, I hated what Kim Kardashian did with the Marilyn Monroe dress. I feel as though she could have done a lot better without ruining another piece of history. Some other outfits I enjoyed from last year were Eileen Gu’s outfit, Jasmine Tookes’s dress, and the purple dress that Olivia Rodrigo wore. I felt that most of the outfits were lacking or ugly. And this year I am excited to see what Miley Cyrus will wear this year if she goes,” said Lucy Goritsas.
