As we enter the month of June, we begin pride month, a time to celebrate all those before who fought for Queer and trans rights. It is not just a month of colorful rainbows but a month to celebrate how far the LGBTQIA+ community has come. As not only a school but as a community, we should all do our best to support those around us and give our respect and understanding. While there are hundreds of different ways to be supportive, there are some simple ways that can really make a difference.

One of the biggest things you can do during pride month is just to be kind, understand that this month is special, and some might celebrate it while others will not. We do not always know if someone wants to celebrate or if someone is not comfortable coming out and celebrating as a member of the community, we should always keep an open mind to how others feel. You do not have to know everything that is going on around you and that’s okay this is also a month to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community, do not be afraid to ask questions and look things up we are all always capable of learning more about others and their communities.

A cool thing about pride is that you do not have to be a part of the community to go to events, you can show support by simply showing up to a get together at a park or your local pride parade. Learn what it is like to be in the community and meet new people, and do not be afraid to ask for Somone’s pronouns it may seem like something so simple and small, but it can make an enormous difference and help make a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Lastly you can donate to LGBTQIA+ organizations that support not just LGBTQIA+ youth but also the fight for equality as well as helping to fund gender affirming care for trans people. Even just $20 can make a difference and means a lot, organizations that you can donate to are ones like The Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign, and National Center for Transgender Equality.

Happy Pride to all those who are a part of the community whether you are out publicly or not, it is your month, and you all deserve it!
