2022 was a strong year for fashion, trends from TikTok, Instagram, and other social media were blasted into everyday life, and it was common to see these trends on the streets. Unlike past years, 2022 fashion and style was all about bringing back past trends from the 80s-2000s and putting a modern-day spin on them. The “Y2K” style being the biggest out of all of them, it included low-rise jeans, layered shirts and tank tops, tracksuits, and anything else that teen celebrities from the 2000s would wear. Clothes like these weren’t hard to find, shops like Urban Outfitters, Garage, H&M, and Pacsun would carry clothes and people could sell Vintage or clothes of such nature on sites like Grailed, Poshmark, and Depop.

This fashion also brought the uprise in small brands, people on social media were making sweatshirts and hoodies with fonts and designs popular in the 2000s. This included a lot of stars and designs with a more cartoony look. A large part of their advertising was on TikTok, these small brands would make TikTok’s following trends that would boost their videos on to the For You Page bringing attention to their brand.

Another big style that originated this past year is a more relaxed than the Y2K style and that is the streetwear aesthetic. This style was diverse and can range from a classic “Skater” style that can be found in thrift stores to pieces from Versace and other designer brands that played into this casual but still stylish wear. Some staples of this type of wear are more baggy clothes like baggy jeans and loose-fitting shirts commonly worn with puffer jackets and vests. Originating in the 90s from hip hop and skate culture in New York, Los Angeles and Japan the style continued to develop since then and now has many people in the wear.

Vintage wear was also extremely popular, this included any clothes manufactured in the 80s-2000s that aren’t produced anymore. Thrift stores had an uproar in sales because of this and people started to go to thrift stores to find good pieces and then continue to resell them online with an increased price to make a profit. While these were a big part of 2022 fashion and even being included on runway walk, these styles weren’t the only thing people were wearing. With style being so prominent this past year , there were a lot of singular clothing items that went popular without only being in one category of style. Parachute pants for example were widely known and something most people had, the loose-fitting plastic material got its name from the comparison material’s resemblance to that used in parachutes.

Shoes played a significant role in the fashion industry this year as well, Jordans became popular and it’s not uncommon to see people wearing these. The most popular shoe that came up is the Panda Dunks, this is a low top, black and white Nike shoe that became one of the most worn shoes in 2022 because of its neutral look and being able to be paired with any outfit. Another commonly worn shoe Nike had was the Air Force 1, the slick white look was a classic for everyone loves.
