On Monday, May first, the annual 2023 Met Gala was hosted, and according to Vogue over 600 people came to celebrate this well-known event. The Met Gala showcases celebrities and designers as a charity event that is considered a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s Met Gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld” in honor of this inimitable designer famous for his work in brands such as Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel.

“I actually thought it was really good this year, most people were on theme and had overall stunning outfits. Pedro Pascal’s outfit was a huge disappointment, like I was expecting so much more from him than what he ended up wearing and I was also really looking forward to Lady Gaga being there but was lowkey disappointed by her outfit, but I loved Anok Yai’s outfit so much, she was absolutely gorgeous,” Miranda Myers said. When asked about her thoughts on the theme she says, “I think the theme in theory was a good idea in honoring Karl Lagerfeld, but since he’s horribly fatphobic, misogynistic, and racist I can’t say I support the theme.”

As the theme was announced for the 2023 Met Gala, controversy rose, as while many believe Karl Lagerfeld to be a fashion icon, others took to criticizing and even boycotting the theme. This year’s concept, despite the mixed opinions, will go down as one of the most memorable in Met Gala history. 

“I feel like it was pretty interesting. I feel like the outfits this year turned out a lot better than how the previous years had been, and I really like the kind of renaissance kind of black and white looks I was seeing so I was a fan of it. A lot more people wore on theme than like the last couple years because the theme this year was more definitive. I really liked Conan Gray. Seeing him there was definitely cool. I really liked his outfit, like his white collar with the embroidery around it,” Isabella Botchek said. She was also asked about the theme, and she says, “I think it was pretty interesting. I didn’t really know who it was in honor of, but I liked the outfits I was seeing turning up. I heard some mixed opinions on the guy, but yeah, I think I liked the theme because of the outfits. I don’t know much about the person.” 

Despite the Met Gala being overall a hit, people would agree there are some misses. “I remember the Kardashians were wearing something really colorful. Like it was red and had a blue cape and it was two-toned. I didn’t like that,” Botchek said. “I was seeing so much old-fashioned and kind of over-the-top looks that were kind of disappointing, but that was just based on personal opinion.”
