YANNY VS LAUREL

If you haven’t been living under a rock the past 48 hours, then it’s likely you have heard the audio clip, where there is a person saying either ‘Yanny’ or ‘Laurel.’ After many polls on Twitter, the final consensus is in, 47% of people who listen to the audio clip hear ‘Yanny’, and 53% of people hear ‘Laurel.’

Obviously the internet is as divided as America was during the Civil War, so we decided to make matters into our own hands. After speaking with the Glacier Peak student body, many people are seriously torn, and confused. (#TEAMYANNY)

After walking around the school for no more than five minutes, I found Korynn Baird, playing the audio over and over again in the halls with Alli Smith. Baird had an interesting hypothesis as to why she was hearing something different than her family.  “I sat with my grandma and asked her what she heard, and she heard ‘Laurel’, so then I asked my grandpa what he heard and he said that he heard ‘Laurel’ too. So then I thought it was just that old people can only hear ‘Laurel’, and younger people hear ‘Yanny’, because that’s what I hear. I think its a hearing thing, because all I can hear is ‘Yanny’, ‘Yanny’ even when I try to hear ‘Laurel,’ I only hear ‘Yanny’ *audio plays* I guess it has something to do with the octave you hear it on,” Baird said.

Baird’s theory may hold up, but in the meantime, I found someone who can choose to hear both.

After interviewing Korynn, I heard the audio playing in a nearby classroom. Inside, Mr.May was playing the audio to his class, where Jane Bekker was confused because she could hear both. “So the first time I heard it, I heard ‘Yanny’, but then my friend told me that you can also hear ‘Laurel’. So I listened and said that, yeah I can hear ‘Laurel’. Mr.May was moving the pitch around to make it ‘Yanny’ or ‘Laurel’ for the whole class, but even when it was supposed to be ‘Laurel’ I could still hear both,” Bekker said.

At the end of the day, and some light research, the original audio is ‘Laurel’, but overlaying audio makes it unclear as to what you’re hearing. I also discovered that Korynn’s theory holds up, and that ‘Yanny’ has a higher pitch that younger ears can pick up on. Listen to the audio down below and decide for yourself, YANNY or LAUREL:
