On Thursday March 5, the Marysville Pilchuck gym was packed full of fifteen confident macho volleyball teams all hoping to claim money for the charity of their choice, as well as macho bragging rights. Representing Glacier Peak, and sporting their tie dye tees, were the boys of the Clearview Clan. This team included seniors Taylor White, Clayton Juarez, Ian Jensen, Ethan Jones, Mason Fairbanks and Daniel Bastian as well as Andrew Hirschi and Miles Russon, who could not attend. The Clearview Clan, who won the qualifying tournament at GP, was up against the best teams from a variety of schools within the district.

This group of seniors have had a close friendship for many years and have been practicing their volleyball skills for months on Tuesday nights to prepare for the tournaments, as well as in the church league they participate in. The team is commonly known as the ‘Mormon Boys’ and they embraced it as they wrote ‘I’m a Mormon’ on the backs of their shirts. “It’s not who we are underneath; it’s what we do that defines us,” Jones said. These guys definitely showed what they could do. Thier hard work was captured in their record because they did not lose a single game in either of the tournaments or their church season.

During the WESCO tournament, the Clearview Clan played 4 teams including Kamiak, who they played twice, Marysville Pilchuck, Meadowdale and Lake Stevens. They conquered their opponents with powerful spikes and incredible teamwork. “We’re killin’ it,” Juarez said. Their first game resulted in a bye against Lynnwood, but the team got plenty of opportunities to demonstrate their abilities against the other four teams.

They were also referred to as the “nicest team” by several of the referees, who were girls’ volleyball players from several schools. All their practicing paid off as the boys beat Lake Stevens 21-12 in a competitive championship game and brought home $738 for the Maltby Food Bank.
