The Mariners start off 2023 with a bang. They beat the Guardians with a Ty France three-run homer. The game started off quietly. But a good pitching duel between Shane Bieber and Luis Castillo.

Matt Brash in his first appearance in his second season pitched a clean inning of work against the best part of Cleveland’s lineup. This included striking out and making him fall over, MVP candidate Jose Ramírez. When Ramírez fell the stadium went crazy for Brash who the city has high hopes for.

Things started to get heated for the Mariners in the bottom of the eighth when Guardians pitcher James Karinchak had a pitch clock violation against Mariner’s shortstop J.P. Crawford. The violation got T-Mobile Park rocking with the crowd roaring in cheers. Crawford got a base hit afterwards. The next batter was Julio Rodriguez, and he flew out to center. After Rodriguez, the Mariners started putting it together. Kolten Wong was hit by a pitch and J.P. stole second. This had two on with Ty France coming up to bat. After almost getting hit in the face with a high pitch. France homers out to right to take a 3-0 lead. This would end up having Andres Munoz to close the game and sealed the victory for Seattle.

Some newly acquired Mariners had their first swings in a home uniform at T-Mobile Park. Three new Mariners were on the lineup card on Opening Day. Kolten Wong started at second base and went 0-3 but did score in a run by the Ty France homer. Teoscar Hernandez went 0-4 while starting out in right field. And Tommy La Stella was the DH going 0-3.

After the Mariners season last year, the excitement of baseball was brought back to Seattle, and it really showed last night. The entire game was rocking, and fans could not get enough of the home team. With Seattle’s win they are tied atop the AL west.

Overall, it was a successful opening night for the Seattle Mariners as Paul Sewald gets the win (1-0) Andreas Munoz got the save, and Ty France has the big hit everyone was talking about opening night.
