You Can’t Have a Rainbow Without Some Rain

Being the new kid junior year is hard enough. Being benched the entire football season makes it even tougher.

“I named it Johnny,” Quarterback Devyn Rainbow said after he pulled down his gray North Face hoodie to reveal a two inch purple scar on his collar bone.

During the game against Lynnwood, Rainbow suffered a break that put him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

“The first play I fractured it, then two plays later I felt it snap and then a player on the opposite team cheap-shotted me and I felt it break completely.”

To fix his collar bone, Rainbow had to have surgery the following Wednesday and had a pin placed to move the bone back into place. Only three games in and one of the two quarterbacks has moved from the field to the sidelines.

“It killed me,” Rainbow said looking down, “it sucked not being able to be out there with your team at games and just having to sit and watch them at practices.”

Even though he could no longer participate, the support poured in.

“Right after this happened I had about thirty text messages just from the team saying how much they loved me and would miss me and that we’ll be ready for next year. They were cheering me on through this entire incident.”

The players even went as far as to write his initials on their armbands during the following game.

Through a smile Rainbow said “That’s the best part about this team and this school, the community here and the support I have received is amazing. I feel accepted and appreciated, we’re like one big family.”

Even though the season is over, Rainbow still keeps a close relationship with the team and regularly hangs out with or goes at to eat with them at Taco Bell.

“They are my brothers, I love them all so much. I am really going to miss the senior class they were all so amazing, I admire them so much.” Rainbow admires kicker Spencer Pettit for his leadership.

“He came up to me in the weight room during the summer and I had no idea who he was but I had heard of him. When I saw him I immediately thought ‘that’s Spencer Pettit’. The entire day we talked about throwing and kicking, we were a family right away. He’s such a good leader.”

With the outpouring of support from his team and fellow student body, Rainbow is ready to prove himself next season.

“I don’t have any regrets, well, besides this collarbone,” he said with a laugh.
