Modern Love

Are we lacking some good old fashioned romance on Valentine’s Day?  Conversation is obstructed by texting, Snapchatting, favoriting Tweets, and other technological forms of communication. A relationship develops while getting to know one another and having heart-to-heart exchanges.

“My girlfriend and I are just going to hang out. You shouldn’t feel the need to reserve one day to show how much you love someone, it should be consecutive, you should show it regularly. So, to show how much we love each other, we are just going to chill and be around one another like usual. I think each other’s company is what is most thoughtful,” Ryan Edwards said.

Ryan feels that love is important, just not a special day or month should define when you show how you feel. Josh Kersten went all out for Valentine’s Day.

“He reserved a private room in my favorite restaurant with flowers all over the place. We went to the Melting Pot and until 3 in the morning, all was well. Then I threw up 28 times. Food Poisoning,” Jessica Tiede said.

Asking someone on a actual date to go out somewhere doesn’t seem to happen as often as requests for “Netflix” dates. A reoccurring dilemma in the teenage dating world is who will text first? The month of romance is upon us which means now is the time for youth to step up and show chivalry is indeed not dead.

“My boyfriend is setting up a surprise date for me. It gives me butterflies! I can’t say anything yet because I don’t know what the surprise is but just the thought and effort he has to do this makes me feel loved and important. I have never had someone do this for me and I’m so excited! Romance is not dead with teenagers, you just have to find a sweet person,” Michael Menchaca said.

Surprise dates where a couple takes turns planning them is one way to spice things up.

“He got me three bags of white chocolate covered Flips, my favorite, guacomole chips, a dozen hot pink roses and a huge koala. That was it for presents. We went  to the Seattle Art Museum, Wild Ginger for dinner and the Michael Jackson laser show at the Seattle Science Center, ” Isabella Azar said.

Some teenagers love the giant bears and consider that an act of love. Some like the simplicity of conversing. Either way, if you feel loved, that’s what matters.
