The 88th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Sunday February 28th and the winners were revealed. The highly anticipated leading role awards went to Brie Larson for “Room” and the highly favored Leonardo DiCaprio finally took home an Oscar for “The Revenant.” DiCaprio ended his acceptance speech by reminding everyone of climate change saying, “Let us not take this planet for granted, I do not take tonight for granted.”

The best picture award, also known as the most prestigious of them all, went to “Spotlight” starring Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams. The plot follows the story of two journalists who investigate allegations against a priest accused of molesting a multitude of boys.

In total, “Mad Max: Fury Road” won the most awards overall with six. Sam Smith performed his winning song for the night “Writing’s On the Wall” featured in the James Bond film “Spectre.” The Weeknd performed “Earned It” and Lady Gaga sang her song “Til It Happens to You” which was featured in the documentary “The Hunting Ground.” The song’s lyrics are about rape on college campuses. Gaga shared the stage with sexual assault survivors that had the audience tearing up and begin a standing ovation. The song was also a nominee for best original song, standing against Sam Smith’s “Writing on the Wall.”

Host Chris Rock, did not come in short referring to the controversy of Hollywood’s lack of racial diversity, making many jokes in reference. Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith boycotted the Oscars, but the award show went on as usual and the many nominees, attendees and crew were recognized.
