Dancing their way to State

In December the dance team started their competition season. They chose Galactic as a theme for their costumes and music. “We used Old school hip hop, Dubstep and we put some Beasty Boys in the music mix,” Coach Angela Gavino said.

Their team goal is to make it to the state competition in Yakima at the end of March. To qualify for state they have to first qualify for districts. To qualify for districts the team must get a score of 195 at a minimum of three separate competitions. Once the team qualifies, they then have one chance to get a minimum of 210 points on their performance to make it to state. The team’s first performance was December 12th at Bellevue High School and they received a score of 196. “It was a good first experience for the new members on the team and it was a good time for all of us to bond,” third year member Olivia Stefanson said.

The team had their second competition at Redmond High School on January 23.  They prepared for a month for the competition and they improved by scoring a 197. “We performed great and everything went pretty smoothly. It was fun,” Senior Ahnika Roenfeldt said.

All they need now is another score of 195 or above at one more competition to qualify for districts. The team has 2 competitions left in Kent before they run out of time. In order to achieve their goal, the team is practicing every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday after school with their new choreographer Myke Dizon. Dizon was chosen because he is an amazing dancer and choreographer. Dizon was a backup dancer for Miley Cyrus for eight years before he came to choreograph the dance team.

Dizon was the brainchild of Coach Angela Gavino to help improve their chances of high scores in competition. “I believe the team has a great chance of making it to state,” Coach Gavino said.
