True Meaning of the Food Drive

Every year around this time, the teachers begin their speeches, promising prizes. A person stands in front of the school at the winter assembly and tells us a heartfelt story of how the food drive benefited them in their time of need, we shake our heads in sadness but then continue on with our day because it does not immediately affect us. We are wrong because, more than we know it does. Thousands of families all over America go hungry every day and rely on the food bank to supply food. Schools all over the country organize drives and fundraisers to make students aware of the hardships these families go through. These drives gather the majority of the food needed, but they can always use more especially around the holidays. Everyone deserves a warm meal on Christmas.

As a first period you collect as many cans, money and unperishable foods as possible to achieve the goal of 15,000 items. Some are looking to help, but most looking for the reward in place to assure that we actually donate. Teachers even do small class goals, a pizza party, a good grade on an assignment but sometimes that not even enough. “When I was a kid we didn’t have any money, my dad used drive us to farms in the middle of the night for us to steal crops, I know it sounds terrible but it was the only way we could eat. I just remember driving to the food bank with my mom, tears streaming down her face and we picked up our box of food. My sister right now goes to food banks. What I have learned is just humility. Trying to appreciate what we have it’s a concept that dying in this world. Just making a habit out of giving up something you enjoy for the joy of someone else could make things so much better.” Eric Benson said. From personal experiences, to people who don’t know anything about it. It can all touch us in some way. Giving back during the holiday season is never not an option. Make someone else’s life just a little bit better.
