The 89th Annual Academy Awards kicked off on Sunday night and opened to the red carpet where various celebrities were taking a stand. Many stars were bearing blue ribbons in solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union. The ribbon is a symbol to many stars as their way of showing support for the “Stand With ACLU” movement. This is just one of the many ways that the organization is using to spread awareness of their cause. The American Civil Liberties Union is a non- profit organization whose mission statement is, “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and the laws of the United States.” The organization not only provides legal assistance in cases where civil liberties are questioned but to advocate for many different policies regarding current issues in today’s society.

The awards show is one of many stages that supporters of the ALCU have shown up to. The numbers of those representing with a pop of blue have grown in large amounts in the last few weeks due to President Donald J. Trump’s controversial immigration policies. Many have made speeches and spoke on the behalf of the organization, like when an actress during the night’s festivities stopped to talk to reporters about the ribbon pinned to her Valentino gown. “I think they stand for basic human rights and equality, and I think we should all be standing for that- anytime, not just now. Always and forever,” said Ruth Negga, best actress nominee. Many others such as Sarah Paulson have spoken on the matter. “Any money you have to spare, please donate to the ACLU. It’s a vital organization that relies entirely on our support,” she said.

“Who ever thought we’d be fashion icons?” the ACLU National twitter account tweeted as the celebrities walked the red carpet. Blue seems to be this year’s signature color.
