Throughout quarantine houses have been slowly filling up with houseplants! They bring so much joy and are a wonderful way to bring the great outdoors inside. They can add so much to a space while also bringing a feeling of freshness and calm. Houseplants actually cleanse the air around them and increase the oxygen in a room! The best thing about them is that they are something that everyone can enjoy. There are houseplants for every different living area, whether you have no space or lots of space or low light or bright light. The next step is figuring out which plant best suits your space and how to take care of them!

Here is a list of some houseplants that are commonly known to be low maintenance and easy to take care of:

  • Snake plant
  • Pothos
  • Monstera
  • Succulents
  • Spider plant
  • ZZ plant
  • Cacti
  • Ivy plant
  • Air plants

These houseplants are great for people if they are just starting out. As beginners learn more about caring for different houseplants, they are so many more beautiful plants to choose from.

In order to keep  houseplants alive, there are a few basics everyone should know. Although, each plant may have different needs, there are still some similarities between each one. The right light exposure, watering schedule, and container choice will determine how well your houseplant flourishes. At most places where people can purchase plants, there will be a little tag attached to the plant that will give you a quick overview of what the plant will need in order to thrive.

All houseplants need some amount of light in order to live, but the amount varies depending on the plant. Plants either need full sun, indirect bright light, or moderate to low light.

Houseplants that enjoy full sun:

  • Succulents
  • Cacti

Houseplants that enjoy indirect bright light:

  • Monstera
  • Spider plants
  • Air plants

Houseplants that enjoy moderate to low light:

  • Snake plant
  • Pothos
  • Ivy
  • ZZ plant

When it comes to watering  houseplants, the most common killer of all plants is overwatering. When it comes to watering them, more is not necessarily better. For many houseplants, allow the soil to slightly dry between watering’s. The amount of water depends on the plant, but over time with some research beginners will figure out what is best for each one. The most important thing to do is create a regular watering schedule because the plants will appreciate the consistency.

Lastly, picking the right container for a houseplant will determine if they die or not. The most important thing to remember is to plant the houseplant in a container with a drainage hole. Do not plant it in a container without one because it will most likely die. Every single plant needs drainage in order to survive.

Overall, these are the basic things to consider when buying  houseplants. There are quite a few other things to consider, but these are the most important things to research when people are starting out. The best thing to do is look up care instructions for a specific plant and decide if you have the space for it to thrive.
