Where Is Our Season?

As the snow begins to fall and the ground begins to cover in a blanket of white, spring sports athletes start to wonder if they are ever going to have a season. The snow days this year have amounted and with days for practice dwindling, games being postponed, and frustrations rising for coaches and students alike. Many of these kids wait all year for their sport to come. But in the case of seniors, it is most likely their last season ever. With the tensions mounting, the student athletes head indoors in hope of sunny, snowless days.

“It’s really hard to golf in the cold/snowy weather because our hands are freezing and it’s hard to have a steady grip on our clubs while we’re chipping and putting. The weather is putting a damper on our game,” Maddie Ellis said. Ellis is a golfer on the Varsity team.

For many sports, you play rain or shine (especially with Coach Blair), but with other sports such as tennis, if the ground is wet you just can’t. There is a serious chance there are going to be a couple girls slipping and sliding to the ground. In track, if there is lightening there is no way you are vaulting with a ten-foot metal pole in your hand. Many sports have their run of the mill weather conflicts, but snow in March was not in the game plan.

“First day of track there was snow on the field so every time I went to run, I’d slip. At that point being there was kind of pointless,” Derek Albrecht said. Albrecht is a long distance runner. Most teams, like track, have only a month of competition where the weather is good. With an already shorter season because of the late winter, many athletes are wondering if their season will be as good as last year.
